Top Tips
- All documents should be single spaced (no double spaces between sentences).
- Architectural Record uses the Oxford/serial comma.
- Architectural Record (and Chicago style) leans toward over clarifying. For example, spell out: square feet, percent, degrees Fahrenheit, etc.
- In body text, always include the full spelling of a city and state with commas after each. For example: Miami, Florida, has warm weather.
- Clarify between hyphens, en dashes, and em dashes. Also, no spaces before or after the dashes.
- Titles are capitalized when part of a formal title/placed before a person’s name, but lowercase when placed after a person’s name.
- Do not use the end notes function in Word; the end notes do not transfer when copied into InDesign. Please simply place the numbers and make them superscripts.
- For end notes, please use numbers, not Roman numerals or letters.
- Please cite end notes fully using MLA formatting - at least include title, author, source, URL (if applicable), date published, and date accessed (do not just list URLs).
- Facade (not façade).
- Air-conditioning (there’s always a hyphen).
- The sponsoring company/a representative of the sponsoring company must be quoted ONCE (and only once) in BNP Media’s continuing education courses. In association with the quote, it is acceptable to note that the individual works for the sponsoring company, however, specific products cannot be mentioned to comply with AIA. This applies to single-sponsored article courses, multi-sponsored article courses (each sponsor should be quoted once), multimedia/interactive/PPT courses, webinar courses, etc.
- Here is an example from Longboard’s recent course, Easing Minds and Boosting Facade Performance: “Architects are looking for ways to apply the profession’s longstanding appreciation for natural-looking and wood-patterned materials to positively affect, for example, workplace performance,” says Christi Dunkley, an executive with manufacturer Longboard who has conducted market studies related to anxiety and building-product choice. “We’re seeing more interest in how natural-looking metal cladding systems can make high-anxiety public spaces more comfortable and inviting.”
